Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Nasonex (mometasone furoate) is a corticosteroid nasal spray effective in preventing or reducing the symptoms of allergic reactions in the nasal passages. It is also effective at treating nasal polyps.

The active ingredient in this product is a steroid. Steroid use spanning weeks or months--as is often the case with Nasonex--can act as an immune system suppressant, which means:

  • Wounds may heal slower than usual;
  • Patients may be more susceptible to catching infections;
  • The body may not be able to fight off infections as well as usual.

Nasonex should not be used when:

  • Injured or ill;
  • Infection of any kind is present;
  • Exposure to infection is likely;
  • Before, during, or after any kind of medical or dental procedure until healing is complete.

Treatment should not exceed 6 months.

The medication comes in a metered-dose spray unit. Each spray delivers 50 mcg of mometasone furoate. The unit needs to be primed by spraying it 10 times prior to first use.

Preventing and Treating Allergies

Allergies occur when the body overreacts to substances in the environment, typically pollen or animal dander, causing the nasal passages to become inflamed and often producing copious amounts of mucous. The resulting symptoms are all-too-familiar to anyone who suffers from allergies:

  • Itching, watery, or burning eyes
  • Swelling around the eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Runny or congested nose
  • Swelling of nasal passages
  • Rash or hives

Nasonex greatly alleviates the severity of symptoms, and sometimes prevents or eliminates them altogether. As a preventive measure treatment should start 2 to 4 weeks prior to the anticipated allergen exposure; otherwise it may be started at any time symptoms are present. Other than starting times, administration is identical in both cases:

  • Patients 12 years of age and up should administer 2 sprays in each nostril, for a total of 4 sprays or 200 mcg, once per day.
  • Patients under 12 should administer 1 spray in each nostril, for a total of 2 sprays or 100 mcg, once per day.
  • Use at the same time each day if possible.

If fighting an active allergic reaction, improvement should be noticeable within 24 to 48 hours of the first dose. It may take up to 2 weeks for the full benefit to be felt. When used as a preventive treatment allergy symptoms may never develop at all; or, if they do, they should be very minimal.

If Nasonex is not producing significant results after 2 weeks of treatment, alternative therapies should be explored.

Treating Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, fleshy growths inside the nasal passages or sinuses. Untreated, polyps may grow in size and number until they begin to:

  • Interfere with breathing
  • Cause snoring or sleep apnea
  • Permanently diminish sense of smell
  • Permanently diminish sense of taste
  • Promote chronic sinus infections
  • Cause frequent headaches

Nasonex is administered in larger doses for nasal polyps:

  • Adults should administer 2 sprays in each nostril twice per day, for a total of 8 sprays or 400 mcg.
  • Spread the two daily doses as evenly apart as possible, and repeat at the same times each day if possible.
  • Nasal polyps are rare in children; speak with a doctor for ideal dosage.

Treatment with Nasonex gradually reduces the size of the polyps, and may eventually eradicate them altogether, eliminating the need for surgical intervention.

Adverse Effects

The most common side effects associated with Nasonex are mild headaches, sore throat and nosebleeds. If more serious adverse reactions occur, stop use until speaking with a doctor:

  • Persistent or severe nosebleeds
  • Infections in the nose or throat
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Low blood pressure
  • Fatigue or weakness

Very rarely some individuals develop glaucoma or cataracts during treatment; regular eye exams are advisable.

Stop using Nasonex and seek medical attention if injury, illness, or infection occurs during treatment.
