Nasacort Aqueous (triamcinolone acetonide) is a potent corticosteroid that rapidly works to alleviate symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis with just once-per-day administration.

This product can be used in patients age 2 and up, though dosage and duration of treatment is often lower in patients under age 12.

Nasacort Aqueous is a steroid, meaning it inhibits the immune system's reaction to allergens. While steroid use does make patients more susceptible to infection, this is minimized to a large degree when administered nasally.

Uses of Nasacort Aqueous

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis are caused by the immune system overreacting to allergens, including:

• Congested nose
• Runny nose
• Nasal itching
• Sneezing

In severe cases, or if left untreated for days or weeks, allergic rhinitis may also cause:

• Swelling of eyelids
• Dark rings under the eyes
• Ear pain
• Sore throat

While Nasacort Aqueous does not directly address the latter four symptoms, it does address the first four; if the medication is used at early symptoms, the latter four are very unlikely to occur.

Patients who suffer from allergic rhinitis often also have asthma, atopic dermatitis, or allergic conjunctivitis. Provided medications for these conditions are not administered via nasal spray, use of Nasacort Aqueous should not present any problem.

Dosage & Administration

Nasacort Aqueous only comes in one strength; 55 mcg per spray. Dosage is therefore regulated by number of sprays, rather than other products. The medication comes in a plastic vial with a built in applicator at top.

In patients age 12 and up:

• For mild allergies start with one spray in each nostril once per day (110 mcg total).
• For moderate to severe allergies start with two sprays in each nostril once per day (220 mcg total).
• Once allergic rhinitis is under control, patients taking 220 mcg per day will ideally drop down to 110 mcg per day as a maintenance dose.
• Do not exceed 220 mcg total per day.
• Treatment may continue indefinitely.

In patients age 2 to 11 years old:

• Administer one spray in each nostril once per day (110 mcg total).
• Only if clearly needed may administration be increased to two sprays per nostril per day (220 mcg total).
• Reduce dosage to 110 mcg per day as soon as possible.
• Treatment should not extend past 3 consecutive months.

While the majority of patients experience some relief after the first dose, it will likely take 3 or 4 days for significant relief and it may take up to 2 weeks for maximum benefit. Nasacort Aqueous should be used every day, regardless of symptoms, for as long as exposure to allergens continues.

To use the nasal spray itself:

• Shake the container well.
• Blow the nose to clear the nostrils.
• With head titled slightly forward, administer a spray in one nostril.
• Repeat on the other nostril.
• Try to breathe normally, do not sniff the medication in deeply.
• Try to not blow the nose for at least 15 minutes after administration.

New bottles of Nasacort Aqueous may need to be primed before first use; simply actuate the spray until a fine mist is produced, usually about 5 times. This may need to be repeated if the nasal spray hasn't been used for a while.

The most common side effects associated with Nasacort Aqueous are headache and bloody nose. Both are rare and not cause for concern unless very frequent or severe.
