Rhinolast Nasal Spray (azelastine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine administered to alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis. The medication works by inhibiting production of antihistamine, which is what causes allergic symptoms associated with rhinitis, including itchy eyes, red eyes, sneezing, and runny nose.

This product is suitable for patients age 6 and up, and can be used to treat both seasonal and perennial allergies.

Using Rhinolast Nasal Spray

Rhinolast Nasal Spray is easy to use; instructions are usually the same for all patients and serious side effects are very unlikely.

The medication comes in vials with an applicator built in on top. Note that prior to first use of Rhinolast Nasal Spray the container will need to be primed; simply place fingers on the collar and squeeze down several times until a uniform spray emerges. Detailed instructions are included with each package.

In patients age 6 and up, treatment usually consists of:

  • Administer one spray in each nostril twice per day, morning and evening.

Doctor instructions may vary, such as one spray per nostril once per day or two sprays per nostril twice per day, but these deviations are unusual.

Rhinolast Nasal Spray is generally not helpful for allergic reactions that impair breathing, such as asthma. Other allergic symptoms, however, are minimized or eliminated entirely, including:

  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Postnasal drip
  • Itchy ears, nose, or throat
  • Sneezing repeatedly
  • Runny nose
  • Coughing
  • Stuffy nose
  • Other congestion

The medication should only be used as long as needed, though that may span weeks or months in cases of seasonal allergies. In case of indoor allergies it may last even longer if unable to improve the situation. Rhinolast Nasal Spray can also be used as-needed, for example if visiting a friend or family member who has pets that induce allergies; start using the spray prior to arrival and continue throughout exposure.

It is generally advisable to stop using Rhinolast Nasal Spray after a vial has been opened for 6 months, as it may be contaminated; a new vial should be opened.

Controlling Allergens

In addition to using products like Rhinolast Nasal Spray to control allergy symptoms, patients can also use some other techniques to minimize allergy exposure, minimizing the need to depend on medications in the first place. Some simple tips:

  • Outdoor pollen - there's not a whole lot that can be done here other than staying indoors more. Those coming in from outdoors---especially children, who really get into things---should take off shoes and remove outer clothing at the door rather than track allergens through the house.
  • Dust mites - a common allergen, dust mites can be kept to a minimum by dusting regularly and washing bed linens at least once a month. Those with severe allergies may want to wash linens more often; once a week or even every other day.
  • Pet dander - those looking to get a pet should choose a breed that don't shed much; this information is easily found with an internet search. Those who already have pets may want to consider making the bedroom off-limits. Small pets, like gerbils or rats, often cause allergy symptoms; if possible keep these somewhere other than the bedroom.
  • Mold & mildew - usually a problem in bathrooms and other areas with high humidity and low air flow. Turn on fans or open windows if the bathroom gets foggy. Clean showers and tubs at least once a month.
  • Cockroaches - these are a commonly overlooked allergen, and notoriously difficult to get rid of. Even keeping a house spotlessly clean often doesn't eliminate them entirely. If cockroaches are present and pest control is affordable, it's worth a shot. It will likely need to be repeated once or twice a year.

Unfortunately some patients have allergy symptoms no matter what effort is put into eliminating allergens; for those patients, Rhinolast Nasal Spray offers rapid relief.
