Pros & Cons of Tritin

Tritin is among the more stimulating of the SSRIs, making it ideal for patients who have low energy or who find that other SSRIs tend to produce drowsiness. Those who have trouble sleeping or experience agitation may find this more of a drawback, however. A few patients find Tritin does induce drowsiness, but they are the exceptions.

Tritin is also less likely to cause some side effects than other SSRIs, though less likely doesn't mean there is no risk at all. All SSRIs can cause sexual side effects, including loss of libido, impotence, and delayed ejaculation. A doctor can prescribe other medications to help with these, and effects nearly always reverse when treatment with Tritin ends.

Though still very rare, patients taking Tritin are more likely to experience an allergic reaction compared to other SSRIs.

Finally, Tritin (or its active ingredient, fluoxetine) is among the more effective treatments for depression.

Dosage & Administration

Regardless of what it's used to treat, in mental applications dosage and administration is strikingly similar.

For otherwise healthy adults:

• Start with 20 mg per day for at least four weeks.
• If no improvements are seen, dosage may be increased in 20 mg increments every four weeks, up to 80 mg per day.
• The majority of patients find 40 to 60 mg per day to be effective.
• Do not exceed 80 mg per day without explicit doctor instruction.
• Treatment may continue for as long as it provides benefit.

Dosage will likely need to be adjusted for patients taking other medications or who have other medical conditions. Age, weight, and other individuals variables may also factor into dosage.

Tritin may be taken for as long as it provides benefit. Treatment usually lasts at least 9 months, but may span years. Treatment with any SSRI should not end abruptly; withdrawal symptoms can be very disruptive, including:

• Headache
• Severe nausea
• Sweating
• Vertigo
• Dizziness
• Insomnia
• Hallucinations

Speak with a doctor about a discontinuation plan; dosage should be gradually lowered over several weeks.

Precautions & Side Effects

Some individuals are at increased risk of serious side effects, particularly if there is a history of:

• Liver or kidney impairment
• Diabetes
• Seizures
• Glaucoma
