Caverject (alprostadil) is a vasodilator used to treat erectile dysfunction, or impotence, in adult men. It is also sometimes used as a diagnostic tool when trying to determine the cause of erectile dysfunction.

Who Uses Caverject?
This medication is used by sexually mature men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by physical nerve or blood vessels conditions, hormonal imbalances, stress, or emotional disorders. In many cases it is a combination of several factors. The end result is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for intercourse, a condition which can have a considerable impact on a man's life.
Caverject greatly improves blood flow to the penis, allowing an erection to occur, regardless of the underlying cause of dysfunction. It is not a cure for erectile dysfunction.
Men with penile implants or abnormalities should discuss possible complications with a physician before using Caverject.
How Does it Work?
The active ingredient in Caverject, alprostadil, is a vasodilator which relaxes muscles and blood vessels in the penis, greatly improving blood flow and allowing an erection to occur. The effects usually last around one hour.
How is it Used?
Caverject is injected into the penis with a syringe. Dosage will depend on the exact condition being treated and other factors, such as patient age.
Each dose requires one injection. Step by step instructions for preparation and use are included with the product and should be reviewed prior to use. The medication will begin to work within 5 to 20 minutes. Effects usually last from 30 to 60 minutes.
Some men experience bruising at the site of injection; this can usually be prevented by applying pressure to the area for 5 minutes after injection is complete.
To prevent skin problems the injection site should be in a different location each time. Some men find it helpful to alternate sides of the penis for each dose.
Each dose should be visually inspected before use for any particles or discoloration; do not use if discovered.
This product should not be used more than once every 24 hours, and not more than 3 times a week.

Patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Caverject should not take this product. This product contains lactose.

- Pain or aching in the penis, testicles, or perineum
- Redness or other skin problems on the penis
- Burning sensation in the urinary opening of the penis
- Headache or back pain
- Vision problems
- An erection lasting more than 4 hours
- Swelling or unusual curving of the erect penis
- Nodules in the penis
- Swollen veins in the legs
- Rapid heartbeat
- Fainting
Contraindications and Interactions:
Caverject is for adult men only and not for women or boys who have not yet reached sexual maturity.
Men with sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or multiple myeloma should not use Caverject as there is a risk of prolonged erection, which can be very painful and may cause damage to the penis.
Men with penile implants or abnormalities should discuss possible complications with a physician before use.
