Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Bepanthen is a cream with a wide range of uses, from preventing diaper rash to improving skin appearance. The active ingredient is pro-vitamin B5, an essential nutrient used to restore and maintain skin health, among other functions.

One of the most remarkable features of Bepanthen is its safety. There are no known side effects, drug interactions or dietary interactions. Rarely some individuals may experience allergic reactions to other ingredients in the cream, but this is very unlikely.

The Many Uses of Bepanthen

Bepanthen cream is a very versatile treatment. Though often marketed as a diaper rash treatment, people regularly use the product in other skin-care applications:

  • Heal and prevent diaper rash
  • Promote healing of minor wounds
  • Promote healing of sunburn and rashes
  • Restore dry or irritated skin
  • Improve skin hydration
  • Improve skin appearance
  • Soothe insect bites or stings
  • Soothe and heal chapped skin, including lips
  • Soothe and heal chapped or cracked nipples from breast-feeding

In essence, Bepanthen can be used to heal and restore any kind of mildly damaged or irritated skin. It has shown some promise in healing more serious injuries as well---such as diabetic ulcers---but it should not be used as a replacement for medical attention in these cases.

Bepanthen cream is as easy to use as it is safe:

  • For diaper rash Bepanthen cream can be used as both a treatment and a preventive measure. In both cases the cream should be applied every time there is a diaper change. Rinse the area and let it dry before applying the cream. Give the cream several moments to be absorbed before covering with a new diaper---or, if possible, leave the skin uncovered. If a diaper is necessary, make sure it is loose enough to allow some air circulation.
  • For chapped or cracked nipples, apply the cream every few hours as-needed to provide relief and promote healing. Be sure to rinse the cream off before breast-feeding, and rinse and dry nipples afterward before reapplying cream.
  • For improved skin appearance, apply cream to clean, dry skin at bedtime or other times in which makeup or other products will not be applied. It may take a few days of treatment for improvements to begin to be noticeable, but over time it will promote soft, supple, properly-moisturized skin---some users even report a reduction in fine lines.
  • For all other uses, including minor burns, cuts, rashes, bites or stings and so forth, simply clean and dry the area and apply the cream as-needed every few hours until the condition is resolved. It may be used indefinitely if treating a chronic condition with no concerns about side effects.

As Bepanthen cream is absorbed into the skin it creates a protective, breathable barrier which inhibits contamination or further irritation. If the application area becomes wet this barrier may be washed off, so the cream should be reapplied.

Bepanthen's soothing effects are usually apparent just moments after application. It may take several days of treatment for a wound, rash or other injury to fully heal.

Warnings & Side Effects

As mentioned above, Bepanthen is remarkably safe. The most significant risk by far---though still very minimal---is that of an allergic reaction. Warning signs of an allergic reaction include swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; severe itching, rash or hives; severe confusion or unconsciousness. These symptoms often develop very rapidly and warrant emergency medical attention.

Using other skin products on areas treated with Bepanthen, such as makeup, sunblock, lotions or topical medications is also unlikely to prove harmful, but doing so may reduce the effectiveness of Bepanthen or vice versa. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing Bepanthen with a medicated skin treatment if unsure of consequences.
