Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
In adults, Fosamax (Alendronate) prevents and treats osteoporosis. The medication slows down the breakdown of bone tissue. When patients have osteoporosis, their bones become brittle and easy to break. Fractures (broken bones) can be avoided through medications such as Fosamax.
In addition to treating and preventing osteoporosis after menopause, Fosamax is also used to stimulate bone density. It is helpful in the treatment of osteoporosis caused by glucocorticoids and the Paget bone disease. Men with osteoporosis can be treated with Fosamax as well.
Fosamax should be taken after patients wake up and before they begin taking food, drinks, or medication. It should not be taken before bed.
Patients should swallow Fosamax and drink plain water. The only water patients should drink with Fosamax is plain water, not mineral water, juice, or coffee. Taking Fosamax with other foods, beverages, or medicines is not recommended.
The effect of Fosamax may be decreased by food. Drinks, drugs, and beverages may interfere with the drug's digestion and absorption into the body.
Following FOSAMAX consumption, patients should remain upright for 30 minutes and not consume any food or medicines.
In the immediate aftermath of swallowing it, one must not lie down. After swallowing the tablet, patients should remain upright for 30 minutes. As a result, the tablet will reach the stomach faster, and patients will be less likely to experience irritation in the esophagus.
It is not recommended for patients to chew or swallow a Fosamax tablet. Taking the tablet with food or dissolving it in the mouth might cause mouth ulcers.
If used for osteoporosis treatment in men and postmenopausal women, the dosage is 10mg once daily or 70mg once a week. Taking 5 mg or 35 mg once a week can help prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Take 5mg in the case of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and 10 mg in the case of postmenopausal women, not on estrogen
This medication should not be taken before going to bed or rising in the morning. Patients could have severe side effects if it is not absorbed. The medication works better if used every day at the same time.
The following effects may occur as a result of taking Fosamax:
Worsening or new heartburn
An abnormality of the esophagus that delays the emptying process (e.g., strictures, achalasia). Having difficulty maintaining an upright posture for longer than 30 minutes. Risk of aspiration. Risk of Hypocalcaemia.
A calcium supplement, an antacid, or a multivitamin may reduce the absorption of Fosamax. A study found that aspirin and alendronate over 10 mg a day increased GI distress.
If patients have an allergy to alendronate, other bisphosphonates, or any other allergies, they should tell their doctor or pharmacist before taking it. Inactive ingredients in this product may cause allergies or other problems. To learn more, contact the patient's pharmacist.
