Lamictal (lamotrigine) is an oral anticonvulsant drug predominantly used to treat focal seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome related seizures in epilepsy. It is also sometimes used in bipolar disorder, where it is effective as a mood stabilizer.

With respect to seizures, in addition to those mentioned above, Lamictal is also used as an additional therapy for:

• Partial seizures
• Absence seizures
• Atonic seizures
• Myoclonic seizures

Lamictal reinforces the action of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitor of signals in the central nervous system. In simpler terms, it helps the body ignore impulses which would otherwise contribute to seizures or undesirable alteration of mood.

Additional uses include treatment of:

• Migraines
• Trigeminal neuralgia
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Neuropathic pain
• Klein-Levin syndrome
• Post-traumatic stress disorder
• Borderline personality disorder
• Hallucinogen persisting perception disorder
• Schizoaffective disorder
• ADHD with comorbid depression
• Depersonalization disorder
• Obsessive-compulsive disorder
• Lennox-Gastaut syndrome

In cases of bipolar disorder Lamictal is most effective used as a chronic maintenance therapy rather than as a treatment for acute mania.

How should Lamictal be taken?

Dosage and administration is best determined by a physician. Underlying conditions are variable and a universal recommended average dose has not been established. Patients also often take other medications, either along with Lamictal or converting to Lamictal. Valproate is among the strongest of other medications, leading to the most lightweight regimen:

• Take 25 mg every other day for two weeks.
• Take 25 mg every day for two weeks.
• On the 5th week, dosage may be increased by 25 mg per day every 1 to 2 weeks.
• 100 to 400 mg are taken per day for as long as the medication provides benefit.

Abrupt discontinuation of Lamictal can cause seizures. It is important for dosage to be tapered over a period of at least two weeks, lowering the dose by fifty percent per week.

Overdose of Lamictal can be fatal and has no specific antidote. Do not take more than the prescribed dose and always take it exactly as prescribed by your physician. If you are unable to do so for any reason contact your physician immediately. In the event of overdose contact a physician and/or Poison Control Center immediately.

Warnings & Side Effects

While many patients taking Lamictal do not experience side effects, others do; they're not particularly uncommon with the medication. In most cases they will stop occurring as the body adjusts to treatment. Patients taking Lamictal may experience:

• Menstrual irregularity
• Abdominal pain
• Nausea
• Indigestion
• Vaginitis
• Double or blurry vision
• Constricted pupils
• Drowsiness
• Strabismus
• Rhinitis
• Anxiety
• Nightmares
• Leukopenia
• Insomnia
• Weight loss
• Dry mouth
• mouth sores

The above side effects are not cause for concern unless severe.

Lamictal use has been associated with serious and severe skin rashes such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, angioedema, and rashes related to multiorgan hypersensitivity. Any symptoms of rash should be reported to a physician immediately for evaluation.

Use of this medication can increase tendencies towards depression and suicidal thoughts or actions. Patients should be monitored for signs of depression or suicidal tendencies, particularly during the first month of treatment, including any unusual changes in thoughts or behavior, and report any such observations to a doctor. Any increase in such experiences or behaviors is fairly consistent with other drugs in the same class.

• Carbamazepine
• Levetiracetam
• Lithium
• Lopinavir
• Olanzipine
• Oxcarbazepine
• 10-Monohydroxy oxcarbazepine metabolite
• Phenobarbital
• Phenytoin
• Pregbalin
• 9-hydroxyrisperidone
• Risperidone
• Topiramate
• Valproate

Inform a doctor or pharmacist if any of the above drugs are being taken before starting treatment with Lamictal, or if use of any of the above will start during treatment.
