Voltaren SR (diclofenac SR) is the sustained release version of Voltaren, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild- to moderately-painful inflammatory conditions.

The SR version is typically taken once or twice per day, while the regular version is taken two to four times per day. On the other hand, the regular version can be split and crushed; Voltaren SR must be swallowed whole.

Like all NSAIDs, Voltaren SR reduces inflammation and the accompanying pain. While it does have some fever-reducing properties, it's not particularly beneficial in that respect and rarely used to lower fever unless accompanied by inflammation. Voltaren SR is also not particularly effective at reducing pain that isn't associated with inflammation, such as diabetic nerve pain.

Taking Voltaren SR

Though limited to painful, inflamed conditions, Voltaren SR is a versatile medication. It is often used to manage pain from acute conditions or to manage flare-ups in chronic conditions, such as:

• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Psoriatic arthritis
• Ankylosing spondylitis
• Osteoarthritis
• Gout
• Migraines
• Menstrual cramps
• Bursitis
• Tendinitis
• Sports injuries
• Muscle sprains & strains

Dosage and duration of treatment is somewhat variable, though with Voltaren SR dosage is rarely lower than 50 mg and rarely higher than 100 mg in a dose. Patient response is huge factor in dosage strength, assuming there's no preexisting conditions which call for modified dosing. Voltaren SR is usually taken just once per day, though in some instances it can be taken twice per day 12 hours apart.

Treatment should be done at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. In lighter pain this may be a few days; for flare-ups in chronic conditions this may span several weeks. Patients, particularly first-time users of Voltaren SR, should not exceed two weeks of consecutive treatment without involvement from a doctor; a doctor can monitor for developing side effects that might otherwise go undetected until severe.

Precautions & Side Effects

Certain individuals are at increased risk of experiencing serious side effects while taking Voltaren SR, even short term. Check with a doctor before starting treatment if there is a history of:

• Allergic reaction to any other NSAID
• Stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding
• Heart, liver or kidney issues
• High blood pressure
• Fluid retention

The above conditions don't necessarily rule out use of Voltaren SR, but patients need to be extra alert for warning signs of potential adverse effects.

Most side effects are not dangerous, including:

• Mild stomach upset
• Constipation
• Diarrhea
• Gas
• Heartburn
• Dizziness

Less common but more serious side effects from Voltaren SR include:

• Anemia
• Heart failure
• Liver or kidney impairment
• High blood pressure
• Heart attack
• Stroke
• Ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding

Women who are pregnant should avoid use of this or any other NSAID during the third trimester.

Voltaren is available in a range of formulas, many of which are available at Kiwi Drug:

• Voltaren tablets are the regular formula of Voltaren SR; these are taken two to four times per day. They can be split and crushed if desired.
• Voltaren Rapid is a fast-acting formula ideal for migraine headaches. Though it works faster than other forms, it also wears off faster.
• Voltaren Emulgel is a topical solution ideal for joint, muscle and tendon pain. Applied to the skin, risk of side effects are considerably reduced.
• Voltaren Osteo Gel is similar to Voltaren Emulgel. While it might not be quite as potent, it's available without a prescription and is fine for mild pain.
