Climara (estradiol) is a transdermal patch used in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for treatment of moderate to severe menopause. It is also used in the treatment of hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration, or primary ovarian failure and the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Climara patches are useful in alleviating or preventing the symptoms of menopause, including:
Patients using Climara patches will notice the above symptoms being alleviated or not occurring at all. Patients are advised to reevaluate the need for treatment every 3 to 6 months.
Treatment Overview
Patients are typically started on 0.025 mg a day, applied to the skin once per week.
This product comes in patches, which should be applied to clean, dry skin below the waist. Patches will need to remain on the body for 1 week. Avoid places where it may be rubbed off, and avoid putting this or any patch near the breasts.
Beyond this, it is largely dependent on the individual woman's response to treatment. Some women will be fine with 0.025 mg per day, others will require increased dosage.
Note that Climara is an estrogen-only medication, also sold as FemSeven. They are ideal for those women who have had their uterus removed, as women who still have a uterus will also need to take a progestogen along with estradiol to prevent uterine cancers from developing. The combination of hormones is called a combined HRT.
As an estrogen-only medication, Climara does not offer women the protection offered by a progestogen. Women who have an intact uterus can still use Climara, but will need to take a progestogen secondarily. Most women find it considerably more convenient to simply buy products that contain both ingredients in a single patch or tablet.
Important Precautions
Climara is not recommended for use in all patients; the risk of serious adverse effects are simply too high. The medication should not be used by patients with:
Climara does have some common side effects associated with it. In most cases such symptoms are mild, not cause for concern unless severe:
Seek emergency medical attention if experiencing any of the severe side effects associated with Climara:
Climara can interact with a wide range of other medications, both over-the-counter as well as prescription. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing medications.
