Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.

Rigevidon

Rigevidon is a prescription-only pill for preventing pregnancy. The medication is about 99 percent effective in protecting against pregnancy. However, issues like missed doses, concurrent use of other medicines, and sickness can lower the effectiveness of Rigevidon to about 91 percent. Take this drug precisely according to the provider’s direction.

Note:  While this medication prevents pregnancy, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections like HIV. Consider using Rigevidon in conjunction with non-hormonal contraception if there’s a risk of disease transmission.

What is Rigevidon, and How Does it Work?

Rigevidon, a generic of Microgynon, is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill containing synthetic progesterone (levonorgestrel) and estrogen (ethinylestradiol) hormones in low doses. A Rigevidon tablet contains 150 mcg of levonorgestrel and 30 mcg of ethynylestradiol, similar to other contraceptive pills like Ovranette and Levest. This medication protects against unwanted pregnancies in three different ways:

  • First, rigevidon prevents the monthly release of eggs from the ovaries (ovulation), which is necessary for fertilization.
  • It also thickens cervical fluid at the neck of the womb, hindering sperm movement toward the egg
  • Lastly, the medication alters the womb lining making it unconducive for zygote implantation even if fertilization occurs.

Uses of Rigevidon

Rigevidon is a contraceptive medication, and its hormonal ingredients help to protect against unwanted pregnancy. It confers immediate protection against pregnancy when taken within day one of the periods. However, when started between days 2 and 5, it is necessary to combine the pill with non-hormonal contraceptives like diaphragms and condoms or abstain from sex for up to 7 days.

Typically, the effectiveness of rigevidon in preventing pregnancy is about 99 percent when taken correctly. However, some conditions, including the concurrent use of other drugs, can reduce efficacy.

Besides contraception, a doctor can prescribe this hormonal drug for heavy or painful menses.

How to Use Rigevidon

Rigevidon comes in packages of 1 or 3 memo strips, each containing 21 coated tablets. The memo strip is designed to help the user remember to take the pills on the designated days. Taking the tablets at a particular time of the day, for instance, swallowing them the first thing in the morning, also minimizes missed doses. Swallow the coated tablets whole, with water if need be.

The 21-tablet pack is marked with the day of the week each pill should be taken. Following the direction of the printed arrow on the pack, take a tablet each day until the strip is empty. The 21 days are followed by 7 pill-free days, during which you should not take the Rigevidon contraceptive. Notably, menstruation-like withdrawal bleeding usually occurs between days 2 and 3 of the pill-free week.

After the 7 pill-free days, start a new pack on the 8th day and continue with the strip until the 21-tablet pack is empty. As long as you don’t miss doses, you will always start the medication on the same day of the week and experience withdrawal bleeding on the same day of the month.

When to Start Rigevidon

If there is no history of oral contraceptive use in the preceding cycle, start rigevidon on the day the bleeding occurs (the first day of the period), which corresponds to the first day of the cycle. Swallow the pill marked for that particular day of the week. For instance, if the menstrual bleed begins on Thursday, take the pill marked Thursday on the strip and continue until the 21 tablets are over.

Starting the pill on days 2-5 of the period requires additional contraception using other methods, such as condoms, for the first seven pill-taking days. As long as the rigevidon pills are ingested as directed, there is no need to use other contraceptives during the seven-day break.

Those switching to rigevidon from other methods of contraception should consult the provider for transition tips. For instance, when changing from progestogen-only pills (POP) to rigevidon, one can stop the POP at any time and start taking rigevidon the next day. But you must use additional non-hormonal contraceptives for the next 7 days to protect against unwanted pregnancy. The directions differ when changing to rigevidon from another combined oral hormonal contraceptive, injectable, or implant contraception method.

Individuals who have had a miscarriage or abortion can also use rigevidon. Consult the doctor on how to use the pill after delivery, abortion, or miscarriage.

Missed pills can be taken as soon as remembered if it is within 12 hours while maintaining the usual time for the next tablet. This might mean swallowing 2 pills in one day. If remembered more than 12 hours later, the effectiveness of rigevidon reduces, necessitating additional contraception.

Rigevidon offers reversible contraception, and when you want to have a baby, you can stop the pill at any time and use non-hormonal methods until the true periods appear.

Potential Rigevidon Side Effects

Side effects are undesired responses that occur when using a drug in the recommended doses. Like other medications, rigevidon can cause several side effects. However, not everyone taking the pill experiences these unwanted effects.

The side effects also vary in severity and frequency. Most of the unwanted effects are mild and resolve as the body gets used to the medication, and they include:

  • vaginitis
  • mood changes such as depression
  • nervousness
  • dizziness
  • changes in sexual desire
  • painful and irregular menstruation
  • acne
  • abdominal pain
  • breast enlargement and discharge

On the other hand, other side effects are rare but can lead to serious health problems. Potentially severe rigevidon adverse reactions include;

  • Hypersensitivity reaction (severe allergy)
  • Painful skin nodules
  • Aggravation of systemic lupus disease
  • Worsening of varicose veins
  • Risk of thromboembolic events

Report any adverse events that occur when taking these coated hormonal pills to the doctor or pharmacist, as a person might experience side effects besides those listed in the medication guide.

Precautions and Warnings

Do not use rigevidon when pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant when taking the pill, discontinue rigevidon and talk to the doctor.

This medicinal product contains lactose and sucrose. Therefore, those intolerant to lactose or other sugars should consider other methods of contraception

Using rigevidon might worsen some conditions, such as high-fat levels in the blood, diabetes, and migraine, necessitating close monitoring throughout treatment. Talk to the doctor about any significant medical conditions to help determine if this drug suits you.

Hormonal contraceptives are associated with a slightly higher risk of developing blood clots in veins than non-users. Thus, rigevidon can cause blood clots.

Drug Interactions and Contraindications

Rigevidon can interact with several other drugs leading to lower effectiveness in preventing pregnancy or causing unexpected bleeding. Some of the medicines this hormonal contraceptive can interact with include;

  • Epilepsy medications
  • Antiviral medicines, including HIV drugs
  • Rifampicin
  • bosentan

Inform the doctor of all the current medications, including prescribed, herbal and over-the-counter medications you are taking to help prevent severe drug interactions.
