Questran (cholestyramine) is used in a variety of applications from lowering cholesterol to hastening the elimination of other medications from the body. It is often used as a cholesterol-reducing medication in cases where dietary changes alone have proven unhelpful. 

Though for the most part a remarkably safe treatment, patients with a history of intestinal blockages, diabetes, thyroid disorders, kidney or liver disease, chronic vitamin deficiency or chronic constipation should use with caution and doctor supervision. 

Conditions Treated 

Questran works by binding with bile it encounters in the intestines, preventing its reabsorption. Without treatment the bile would be reabsorbed and ultimately wind up back in the liver, where it would be secreted once again to aid digestion in the intestine. Bile which is not reabsorbed is instead excreted as waste.  

Bile elimination is helpful in a number of conditions: 

• Lower LDL cholesterol - The liver uses cholesterol to produce bile. When large amounts of bile are already present, being reabsorbed and reused, the liver has little need to extract cholesterol from the blood to make new bile. By forcing the bile to be excreted, the liver has no choice but to remove cholesterol from the blood to make new bile, ultimately lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. 
  

• Reduce itching associated with liver failure - When bile is reabsorbed through the intestine it enters the bloodstream, where the liver should extract it in preparation for the next secretion. When the liver is unable to extract bile from the bloodstream, quantities will build up in both the blood and the skin, a condition which produces severe itching. Removing excess bile with Questran will reduce or eliminate the itching. 
  

• Reduce diarrhea from excess bile - Bile attracts water, and excess water in the intestine can cause diarrhea. After certain surgeries, such as gallbladder removal or shortening of the small intestine, as well as in some bowel conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, bile will collect in relatively large amounts, attracting excess water, which causes chronic diarrhea. Expelling the excess bile will reduce or eliminate the diarrhea. 
  

• Mix each dose into a non-carbonated beverage or a food with high liquid content, such as soup or applesauce.
• For each single packet or scoop there should be 2 to 6 ounces of fluid; if taking 2 packets, mix with a minimum of 4 to 12 ounces of fluid.
• Consume prepared mixture in entirety; do not hold the mixture in the mouth, doing so may cause tooth discoloration. 
  
• Brush teeth after each dose to prevent tooth discoloration.
• Drink plenty of additional fluids to prevent constipation.
• Do not exceed prescribed dosage, doing so may cause severe constipation.

• Lowering LDL cholesterol levels

• Reducing diarrhea associated with certain conditions or surgeries
• Hastening the elimination of certain other medications

• Each single dose should be mixed with a minimum of 2 to 6 ounces of fluid; if taking 2 doses, mix with 4 to 12 ounces of fluid, 3 doses, 6 to 18 ounces of fluid, and so on.
• Do not hold the mixture in your mouth, as doing so may cause tooth discoloration. Likewise, always brush teeth after taking a dose.
• Do not consume dry powder or take more than prescribed; doing so may cause severe constipation.
• This treatment may prevent certain nutrients and other medications from being absorbed properly; taking supplements and other medications several hours before or after Questran Lite Powder will prevent absorption issues.
• Drink extra fluids while using this product to prevent constipation.
