VESIcare (solifenacin) is an antispasmodic medication used to treat overactive bladder. The medication works by relaxing muscles in the bladder, allowing the bladder to hold more urine and reducing the frequency and urgency of urination.

VESIcare should not be used in patients who have difficulty urinating or who have gastric retention.

Overactive bladder can be a very disruptive condition for the individuals who suffer from it. Symptoms include:

• Frequent urination (more than 8 times per day)
• Urgent need to urinate
• Urinary incontinence
• Waking up more than once a night to urinate

To some extent the symptoms above can vary depending on a number of factors, such as the amount of fluids consumed, other medical conditions, or other medications being taken. VESIcare is only effective if the symptoms are caused by bladder contractions.

If overactive bladder is the cause, VESIcare will help minimize or eliminate symptoms. Results can be further enhanced with lifestyle changes, such as not drinking before bed, avoiding foods and fluids that promote urination, maintaining a healthy weight, and so forth.

Treatment with VESIcare is simple:

• Start with 5 mg once per day. This dose is sufficient for the majority of patients.
• Dosage may be increased to 10 mg per day if 5 mg fails to produce good results.
• Tablets may be taken with or without food according to personal preference.
• Tablets should be swallowed whole and not split or dissolved in food or drink.

Most people notice some improvement within two weeks of starting treatment, but it may take a month for full benefit to be seen. If no significant improvement is seen after one month, it is unlikely the medication will provide benefit if treatment continues; alternative options should be considered.

Treatment may continue for as long as the medication provides benefit. It is not a cure; if underlying issues are not discovered and addressed, ending treatment will likely cause overactive bladder symptoms to return.

Warnings & Side Effects

VESIcare can reduce the amount sweat produced, putting patients at increased risk of heat stroke. Care should be taken to avoid overheating; exercising or physical labor in hot weather, hot tubs, saunas, and similar activities should be avoided while taking this medication.

Some patients find VESIcare causes drowsiness and blurred vision, particularly at the start of treatment. Care should be taken to avoid potentially dangerous activities, such as operating machinery, until effects are known. These side effects usually stop occurring after a few weeks of treatment.

The effects of VESIcare on unborn or nursing babies are unknown.

Commonly experienced side effects include:

• Stomach upset
• Headache
• Drowsiness
• Weakness
• Blurred vision
• Constipation
• Dry mouth
• Dry eyes

The above side effects are not cause for concern unless severe or persistent. In most cases they will stop occurring as the body adjusts to treatment.

VESIcare can interact with a range of other medications. Dangerous interactions are very unlikely, but it can reduce the effectiveness of one or more of the medications involved. To be on the safe side check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking other medications along with VESIcare.
