Ambrodil S Syrup (ambroxol, salbutamol) is a syrup used to help remove mucus from the lungs and airways when the mucus is so thick and/or sticky that it's difficult for the patient to cough it out. It can be used in both acute and chronic conditions, and is suitable for ages 2 and up.

Used as directed this is a very safe medication with only mild gastrointestinal side effects and no known interactions with other medications.

How it Works

Ambrodil S Syrup contains two active ingredients:

• Ambroxol is an expectorant that thins and reduces the viscosity of mucus.
• Salbutamol, also known as albuterol, is a bronchodilator that helps open airways.

Together these medications help patients remove excess mucus from the lungs and throat, improving the ability to breathe and alleviating discomfort, as well as restoring the protective properties of normal mucus function.

Ambrodil S Syrup also has a local anesthetic effect and some anti-inflammatory properties, which soothes pain, swelling and tenderness in the throat.

This medication is often used to alleviate difficult coughing and/or soothe airways in:

• Acute conditions such as the common cold
• Chronic conditions such as asthma or COPD
• Sore throat, particularly when soreness is due to coughing
• Excessive mucus secretion
• Abnormally viscous mucus from any cause

If throat irritation is present the syrup's anesthetic effects may be noticeable immediately after administration. Full benefits of ambroxol's expectorant properties and salbutamol's bronchidilation effects should be noticeable after 30 minutes. Most patients notice effects start to decline after 3 to 4 hours.

Each bottle of Ambrodil S Syrup comes with a measuring cup and dosage instructions. A doctor should be consulted before administering this medication to children under 2 years of age.

Side Effects

As mentioned above, side effects from Ambrodil S Syrup are typically very mild. The only side effects associated with ambroxol are mild nausea, indigestion, heartburn, and, more rarely, diarrhea or vomiting. Patients with preexisting gastrointestinal issues---such as ulcers or irritable bowel syndrome---should use this product with caution and consider alternative options if it exacerbates these conditions. There are no known drug interactions associated with ambroxol.

Salbutamol can produce shakiness, restlessness, jitteriness and other stimulant-related side effects, though they are unlikely when the medication is ingested at the low doses found in this medication. Some medications, notably certain antidepressants and blood pressure medications, may reduce the effectiveness of salbutamol but will not produce dangerous complications.

Patients should take care not to take other medications that produce the same effects---other expectorants or other bronchodilators---without first checking with a doctor or pharmacist.

The effects of Ambrodil S Syrup on unborn or nursing babies are unclear. It is unlikely to cause harm but should generally be avoided unless benefits outweigh potential risks, particularly in the first trimester.
