Prempro (conjugated estrogens, medroxyprogesterone acetate) is a medication used in the treatment of moderate to severe menopausal vasomotor symptoms, moderate to severe menopausal vulval and vaginal atrophy, and for the prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Working to restore the hormonal balance that is lost during menopause, Prempro offers both estrogen and progestin in one convenient medication. Pain, wild mood swings, fatigue, and other symptoms that influence mood and behavior are common during this time; likewise other changes, including vaginal dryness, itchiness, or irritability, urinary incontinence, or weight gain also contribute. Prempro alleviates or eliminates these symptoms, until the body's new, lower estrogen levels are stabilized.
It's the getting to the post-menopausal stage that's the hard part. What Prempro treats is the fluctuating estrogen levels---slowing, stopping, even reversing the symptoms of menopause until the body is done modifying its estrogen production. Unfortunately, there is no calendar for that; patients can start in their 30s, 40s, or 50s, and symptoms may continue for just a few months to 10+ years.
Dosage & Administration
A typical Prempro therapeutic dose is a single tablet, taken by mouth, once per day. This should be repeated daily until treatment ends, which can be quite variable.
Prempro should only be used by women with a uterus; women who have had the uterus removed do not need to take a progestin along with the estrogen. Use of estrogen/progestin combinations are suggested in the lowest dose and shortest duration given treatment goals---and risks---for the individual patient. Periodic re-evaluation of menopausal women should be performed to determine if treatment goals have been met and therapy is complete.
There is little risk of experiencing side effects associated with Prempro; however, there is still a risk and that risk poses numerous detrimental health factors. Risk is increased when there are other factors, such as smoking, being obese, and sitting all day, that elevate the potential damage to health.
Prempro is also a beneficial treatment in respects other than those it is prescribed to treat. While there is a long list of potential side effects below, there is often somewhat of an opposite effect as well, at least in some areas; cramps may clear up completely, skin may be fresh and clear, sex drive is often renewed, and so forth.
