Trimovate (nystatin, clobetasone, oxytetracycline) is used to treat or prevent bacterial and fungal infections when present on certain skin disorders. It is a potent medication, but safe for use in all ages if care is taken to use as directed.

Conditions Treated

This medication comes as a cream, which is applied directly to the affected area. It's often used to combat or prevent secondary infection in:

• Atopic dermatitis
• Seborrhoeic dermatitis
• Anogenital pruritis
• Nappy rash
• Psoriasis
• Eczema
• Intertrigo

Trimovate is an effective treatment due to its three active ingredients:

• Nystatin is an antifungal medication that destroys fungal cells.
• Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that destroys bacteria.
• Clobetasone is a steroid that soothes inflamed, painful, itchy skin.

In other words, Trimovate is designed to treat or prevent fungal and bacterial infections when present in inflammatory skin disorders that respond to steroids. It is not effective against viral infections, such as chicken pox or herpes simplex; the medication has no antiviral properties.

Products containing steroids should not be used to treat acne or rosacea on the face; steroids can worsen these conditions.

Getting the Most from Trimovate

Trimovate can be applied once or twice per day. Gently rubbed into the skin, the medication should be absorbed within 30 minutes but will continue to work, soothing skin and destroying invading microorganisms. When the medication is fully absorbed other skin products, such as makeup or a moisturizer, may be applied. Other topical medications are sometimes also administered; speak with a doctor or pharmacist if this is the case---a longer wait time between applications may be advisable.

Applying the cream is simple:

• Clean and dry affected area.
• Gently rub a thin layer of the cream over the entire affected area.
• Do not cover application site with tight clothing or airtight dressings unless explicitly instructed to do so by a doctor.
• Continue treatment for up to 7 days if needed.

Results vary to some extent between individuals; some notice improvements after the first application, others take several days of treatment to see significant results. Treatment should not extend past 7 consecutive days without doctor approval.

Trimovate may sting a little when first applied, but otherwise side effects are very rare. If pain, redness, swelling, rash or blisters develop the cream should be washed off and use discontinued; these are symptoms of an allergic reaction. Because Trimovate is not readily absorbed into the bloodstream it is very unlikely to interact with other medications or produce side effects other than at the application site.
