Allegra is a widely used antihistamine, used regularly in order to control allergic reactions. As with any other allergy medication, you may expect that with Allegra, side effects could occur. These are more likely to happen if you are taking any other medicines in combination with Allegra, or if you have any health problems that may be aggravated with continued use of this drug.

There are some reactions that are fairly mild and common to users who take Allegra. Side effects that fall in this category would include coughing, colds, fever, nausea, drowsiness, headache, menstrual problems, indigestion and back pain. Back pain is a side effect that is more common in the 180 mg dose than in the 60 mg one. It should be noted that adults are recommended to take two 60 mg tablets a day, or one 180 mg a day, so if you experience the back pains in the 180 mg dose, taking the 60 mg dose twice a day instead might offer some relief.

If you are experiencing troublesome side effects, consider taking a lower dose of this medicine. If the side effects persist, it is time to consult your doctor as to the best course of action. Also, if you are not sure if you will experience the most common side effects of this medicine, it is best to refrain from doing risky activities such as driving and operating heavy machinery immediately after taking it.

It is also possible for a person to be allergic to allergy medications. In the case of Allegra, it is possible that a person is allergic to its dominant fexofenadine content. If a person has been known to be allergic to other drugs containing this chemical, the effects could be prevented by avoiding taking Allegra altogether. In case a person experiences allergic reactions such as fevers, rashes and difficulty breathing upon ingesting Allegra, discontinue the use of the medicine immediately. Consult a medical worker as soon as possible as to the course of action one must take.

Children may be especially susceptible to Allegra side effects, being more delicate of build. Make sure to give them only the proper dose. Do not exceed the recommended dose! Children younger than 12 years of age may find it easier to take the 30 mg (5 mL) suspension form of Allegra instead of the tablet form. This dosage is given twice a day. However, small children (aged 2 to 11) who suffer from decreased renal function may benefit more from a 30 mg/5 mL dose given once a day only.

If you are suffering from heart, liver or kidney problems, and you start to feel ill while taking this medicine, you may not be experiencing ordinary Allegra side effects. Allegra has highly contraindicative properties, which means some conditions and medications may significantly affect - and even impair - the drug's performance. Drugs like ketoconazole, rifampin and erythromycin, and antacids that have an aluminum or magnesium base, may pose some problems when taken with Allegra. Keep a close watch on the substances you ingest when you are also taking this drug.
