Vitaros is a prescription-only medication for treating erectile dysfunction (ED) in adults above 18. The medication comes as a cream applied at the tip of the penis. What is Vitaros, and How Does it Work?

Alprostadil is indicated for treating erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, in adults above 18. Here are the instructions for using Vitaros cream:

• Wash your hands with soap and water, then remove the AccuDose dropper from the package as indicated in the manufacturer’s leaflet
• Hold the penis upright with one hand and widen the meatus (opening at the penile tip) by gently squeezing the tip. If not circumcised, retract and hold the foreskin before widening the meatus
• Using the other hand, hold the AccuDose barrel between your fingers and place the container tip above the penile opening as close as possible. Do not insert the tip of the applicator into the meatus.
• Expel the cream into the penile meatus by pressing the container plunger slowly but firmly using the thumb. Ensure all the cream in the applicator is released.
• Keep the penis upright for about 30 seconds for the medicine to penetrate the tissues. If any excess cream remains at the tip of the penis, use the finger to push it into the opening. Avoid urinating immediately after applying the medication to prevent expelling the cream before it begins acting.
• Replace the AccuDose container cap and return the applicator to the sachet for safe disposal.
• After applying the medication, thoroughly wash your hands with soap to avoid accidentally putting the cream into the eyes, as it irritates them.

Dosage

The physician recommends the initial dose for Vitaros. Generally, individuals with severe erectile dysfunction or whose ED do not respond to oral medications such as PDE inhibitors should receive 300 mcg of alprostadil as the start dose. The amount can be titrated to 200 mcg if the patient is intolerant of the local side effects.

Possible Side Effects of Vitaros

Every medication can produce unwanted effects even if used at the correct doses. Similarly, Vitaros users might experience some side effects, although they vary from person to person. Some side effects are mild and common, while others are rare but potentially severe.
