Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a widely used medication effective for treatment of migraine headaches, and in injection form additionally used to successfully combat cluster headaches.

In all its forms Imitrex is an abortive medication; it stops a headache that is already in progress. It will not prevent a headache from starting or reduce the frequency of headaches. Imitrex has not shown to be effective against any type of headaches other than migraines and cluster headaches.

There may be some color variation in Imitrex Injection Refill Packs due to the medication originating from differing batches. In liquid form Imitrex is usually clear to pale yellow; slight discoloration is not cause for concern. Do not use if the fluid is cloudy or contains particulates.

Administering Imitrex Injections:

Administration of Imitrex by injection provides the fastest possible headache relief, with effects felt just 5 to 15 minutes after the injection is given.

Imitrex is ideally taken as soon as headache symptoms are noticed, though it will still help relieve pain at any stage.

• Flushing or feeling warm
• Mild dizziness or lightheadedness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Muscle cramps
• Drowsiness

Rarely some patients experience serious side effects which should be brought to the attention of a physician:

• Pain, tightness, or heaviness in chest or throat
• Rapid heartbeat
• Difficulty breathing
• Allergic reactions

Patients with certain health conditions are at greater risk for severe side effects:

• Poor blood circulation
• Coronary heart disease or angina
• High blood pressure
• Liver disease
• Ischemic bowel disease

Imitrex injections should not be used if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast feeding.
